Studies of the Natural Environment and Conservation | |
What you could learn about:
Design and planning of environmental research projects, field data collection, ecosystem assesment,
production of integrated management plans for nature conservation, planning and implementation
of monitoring of conservation management outcomes. Internships in other aspects of
nature conservation are also available.
What you could be doing:
Working closely with experts in the field, conducting environmental assesments, driving
long distances, setting up and breaking camp, looking after scientific equipment,
walking through variouse ecosystems, inputting data into laptops at night, uploading
data to servers, assisting to set, clear and clean mammal traps, doing your share of camp
duties when out in the field, compiling conservation management plans.
What you need:
You will need: to have completed, or be currently engaged in study in an aspect of the
natural environmental sciences; to be comfortable working outdoors, sometimes in remote and trying
conditions; to be willing to do whatever is necessary to assist the field scientist; to want to
gain the special insights into ecology and nature conservation offered by the Australian
environment.

Nature Conservation Management
The Nature Refuge Landholder's Association - Queensland Inc.
is working with private landholders, government agencies, universities and other research institutions
to develop models for effective management of nature conservation and natural biodiversity on
privately owned lands.
As in most parts of the world, many of the key threatened ecosystems in Australia are located on
privately owned or managed land, and not protected within any National Park or other formal
reserve system. In Queensland, several thousand private landowners have formally dedicated their land to
nature conservation in various ways. Interns working with NaRLA can make a valuable contribution to this important work.
Opportunities may be available to study in the following ecosystems: rainforest, heathlands,
savannah grasslands, eucalypt forests, and coastal wetlands, among others. Internships may include
work in the field, laboratory, and areas such as computerised mapping.
